Baxter and the Basics
And So Are You
January 24, 2014

Baxter and the Basics came to me during the “Snowpocalypse.” So it was appropriate that the first track that I listened to of theirs was “Black Ice.” That first track had me hooked from the start because it was a fast paced rock trip similar to “Ballroom Blitz.” After that track I was ready to go to the nearest punk show and mosh with my fellow rockers. Of course, the roads were covered in sheets of ice, so that wasn’t going to happen.

The next couple of tracks slowed down only gently. One of the tracks that really caught my eye was “Girl at The Lingerie Store.” In a way, it partnered their raw rock foundation with a psychadelic accent. It created this distinctive sound that can only be found in Athens, GA. The sound where it can take rock, country or rap, but it adds a flair of psych that’s only found in that town.

The album as a whole is a breadbasket of different sounds, but together they create a harmony that shows off what Athens, GA is all about. It was a very interesting album, and it leaves me wanting more from them.
