Dave Grohl’s Sound City Musical Memories Shorts
Back in September, (just before playing Music Midtown), Dave Grohl made a comment at a show about Foo Fighters not having many more shows. The internet went nuts with rumors of the band breaking up and on October 2nd Grohl wrote an open letter to his fans to set the record straight. In it he explained that band isn’t finished, but he is taking a break to focus on his jump into film making.
Dave’s debut as a feature documentary director/producer will be Sound City – a film about the love of analog music and more specifically the famous L.A. studio of the same name. A film that Grohl says “could be the biggest, most important project [he’s] ever worked on.”
He was inspired after purchasing the same recording console used in the legendary studio. The console was built in 1972 and is considered to be the crown jewel of analog recording equipment and has captured artists such as Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Guns and Roses, Nirvana, Metallica and TONS of other musical legends.
In advance of the film’s release, Grohl has been producing short “Musical Memories” videos shot during the film’s production and posting them online. The most recent video features Rob Turner from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (below) but there are 31 others you can watch on the Sound City Movie YouTube channel. While some are very famous names like Tom Petty, Weezer, and Trent Reznor others are very important figures in the music scene that you may not recognize. I recommend keeping Wikipedia open nearby as you cruise through the video playlist. It’s quite an educational experience.
